Goju-Ryu Karate emphasizes a balance of hard and soft techniques, Moo Duk Kwan Tae Kwon Do focuses on powerful kicks and discipline, while American Kenpo is known for its practical self-defense moves. Derek’s ability to excel in these diverse styles demonstrates his adaptability and deep understanding of martial arts principles.


His training is not just about physical skill but also about embodying the black belt principles: modesty, courtesy, integrity, self-control, and indomitable spirit. These values guide his approach both inside and outside the dojo.


Achievements on the National and International Stage


Derek’s competitive record is impressive. He has won over 30 national titles and earned recognition as a two-time EKL Hall of Fame inductee, both as a junior and adult competitor. He is also a National Blackbelt League Hall of Fame inductee.


In 2025, Derek represented Team USA at the WKU World Championships in Trier, Germany. There, he earned 3rd place in Hard Traditional Kata and 2nd place in Kumite-style sparring. These accomplishments highlight his skill and dedication on a global level.


Looking ahead, Derek is a member of the 2026 Team USA for the International Combat Organization, continuing to compete and represent his country with pride.

In addition, he established Team MMAA, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping rural competitors offset the costs of training and competition. This initiative addresses a common barrier for athletes in less populated areas who struggle to access resources and funding.


By creating Team MMAA, Derek ensures that talented martial artists from rural communities have opportunities to compete and develop their skills without financial strain.
